People, Pattern, Place: Brazil

2015

“People, Pattern, Place” is an ongoing series that aims to create geometric patchwork compositions using actual people, and in turn capturing the urban fabric of place. This collaborative community project was done with a Samba group on the island of Itaparica, near Salvador, Brazil. It used the round, hand-sewn form of patchwork that is called “fuxico'“ (foo-SHE-koo) in Brazil. Prior to beginning the project, Shelley first met with local women to learn some of the patchwork styles used in this area of Brazil. The photo was then integrated into a fabric composition.
