Memória (In Memory)

Museu de Arte Moderna da Bahia (Salvador, Brazil), 2008. 61” × 81” (155cm × 206cm)

This site-specific sugar mural was created for the exhibition "Saccharum BA", at the Museum of Modern Art of Bahia in Salvador, Brazil (June 15 - July 19, 2008). The word Saccharum, Latin for sugar, describes the theme of this group show: sugar and its cultural and economic influence in Brazil, with special focus on Salvador. The physical and psychological makeup of Salvador is steeped in the history of sugar, colonization and slavery. The Museum site itself was once a sugar processing factory, thus providing the ideal location for a show of this nature.
