Outdoor sculpture for l’École des métiers du tourisme
My current project is a public art commission with the Montreal School Board (Commission scolaire de Montréal) for a refurbished school in the heart of downtown Montreal.
The new École des métiers du tourisme will be housed in the old Victoria School building on de Maisonneuve and St. Marc.
Here is a tiny styrofoam maquette of the design:
- Front view
- Back view
- Side view
- sample made in Ductal concrete
The sculpture will be 9 feet high (9 feet diameter) and made in concrete. The texture and relief of the tree growth rings and the bark will all be made with the impression and relief of actual books

LOVE this. I didn’t realize the books were going to form the bark of a tree. It’s gorgeous. And thought provoking. Exactly the sort of thing that school children should be exposed to. Hurray for art that makes you smart.

How were you able to come up with this idea? It’s intricately designed even if it’s just a styrofoam model, I can really see the details to it. Awesome, just awesome. Other schools should follow yours.
